Malaysia will be celebrating its 68th Independence Day on 31st August. Over the last seven decades, the country has grown by leaps and bounds, and this growth is reflected in its Independence Day ad campaigns, many of which evoke the national spirit year after year. While brands are busy creating ad campaigns for this year, we decided to give you a glimpse of some of the most awesome Malaysian Independence Day commercials from recent years.

1. RHB Group: Teguh Bersama (2022)

Progress is made when we work together towards a shared goal despite our differences. That’s true for every facet of life, including nation-building, and RHB Group exemplified this through this lovely spot.

The ad showcases a couple of kids who are chosen to lead their teams in a project. However, the two start on the wrong foot, and things don’t look good between them from the very beginning. How the two of them resolve their differences and work towards the success of the project forms the crux of the advert.

Differences are often the cause of contention. But they should not be the cause of hostility. If the kids in this ad can understand this, then so should the adults.

2. Maxis: Budi Pekerti (2024)

The real spirit of Independence Day doesn’t lie only in waving the national flag but is embodied in the little and meaningful acts that we do in the name of national duty. This inspiring commercial, which is based on the true story of Aiman Ariffin, is a fine example of that.

The ad shows a young boy going out to celebrate Malaysia’s Independence Day. But his enthusiasm is soon curbed by the sorry and rather messy state that people leave that spot in after the celebrations. He realizes that the real essence of Independence Day lies in carrying out the smallest acts towards the country’s progress, and begins cleaning the place. Soon, he is joined by other volunteers who share his sentiments towards their country.

Anybody can do the bare minimum of waving the national flag and yelling their lungs out at the national day parade, but working towards the betterment of the country is a job possible only for the select few!

3. Taylor's University: Show and Tell (2022)

Our greatest achievements lie not in what we make but who we make them for. This brilliant and heartwarming commercial by Taylor’s University throws the spotlight on the need for being mindful of the needs of people around us while modelling our aspirations.

The ad begins with a teacher asking her students what they would make if they were inventors. While some say that they would make the most magnificent buildings and flying cars, a kid says that he would make a robot to help his friend with the household chores so that he can attend school.

4. Grab: Makan Makan Malaysia (2019)

Malaysia is known for its rich diversity– different ethnicities, cultures, and histories. And yet all of these are bonded together by their shared Malaysian roots. Just like the rich Malaysian cuisines, which have different tastes, flavors, and countless aromas.

This 2019 spot subtly juxtaposes different Malaysian characters and sceneries with the numerous Malaysian foods. And it’s mouth-watering to say the least! Watch the ad to know what I am talking about.

5. Petronas: Guard & Guardian (2024)

What is a nation without its people? And what good are people if they can’t lean on one another in times of need! Our care for each other fosters the spirit of independence, and this Petronas advert showcases that in the most heartfelt way possible.

The commercial follows the story of Faizul, a committed security guard who goes above and beyond the usual duties expected of him to help and support the people of his locality. But will his daughter receive the same level of support from others after her mother passes away? Watch the advert to find out.
