2. Tenaga Nasional Berhad: Aku, Tenaga

Malaysia has come a long way ever since the country gained independence in 1957. Through all these years and way before that, since 1894 to be precise, Tenaga Nasional Berhad has been a first-hand witness to the massive transformation that the country has gone through. This heartwarming spot is a tribute to Malaysia’s rise through the years, and traces it alongside its own journey, which began as a spark.

The ad throws the spotlight on some of the most iconic moments in Malaysia’s history, from the arrival of color television and the launch of Malaysia’s first national car to the country lifting the Thomas Cup and sending Malaysia’s first astronaut into space. And then came the COVID pandemic, which, despite posing a monumental challenge, brought the entire country together.

Throughout this journey, TNB stood hand-in-hand with fellow Malaysians, bearing testimony to the unflinching zeal of the country and its people. Now that’s what I call a damn good National Day campaign!

3. TM Technology Services Sdn. Bhd: Gema Malaysia

Sometimes people have to make individual sacrifices to serve the greater good. And this inspiring spot is a message to every patriot that there is no greater good than sacrificing for one’s country.

The ad takes us back to the early hours of Merdeka 1957 when a technical glitch in Radio Malaya’s connection to Stadium Merdeka threatened the broadcast the following morning. But thanks to the grit of two technicians, one of whom has a pregnant wife who is due to give birth in the next few hours, the connection was secured despite the terrible weather, ultimately ensuring that the historic broadcast went ahead uninterrupted the following morning.

The story might be a work of fiction, but the resilience and grit of Malaysians aren’t!

4. Perbadanan Harta Intelek Malaysia: Rasa Sayang

The true measure of a country's progress and prosperity doesn't lie in the wealth or success of its people. Rather, it is reflected in how contented they are, how much pride they take in what they do, and the values they pass on to their young ones.

This heartwarming spot follows a musician and his schoolgoing son, who’s asked by his teacher to write an essay on what he dreams of being when he grows up. When his father tells him that he’d be happy if he grows up to be a better person than him, he writes an essay saying that he wants to be just like his father when he grows up. Never ashamed to earn a living to raise his son, never failing to shower him with love– to the young boy, his father was the real face of independence.

I have no clue how the man managed to read his son’s essay with a smile throughout without even getting his eyes welled up with tears. You think you can do it without shedding a tear or two? Give it a shot!

5. PETRONAS: Jangan Kau Kata (Do Not Say)

From traditional crafts and cultural performances to everyday acts of kindness and people living alongside one another, the film presents humanity, empathy and mutual respect as just as important to a nation's wealth as its material progress. And perhaps that's what makes the film particularly fitting for Merdeka: it doesn't simply ask audiences to celebrate Malaysia.
