It’s Father’s Day tomorrow and brands are busy launching one campaign after another to demonstrate their love for fathers. Daughters are fawning over them, wives are swooning over them, and brands are trying their best to woo them. The only ones oblivious to these celebrations are fathers– and many of the sons too!

You see, the father-son bond is one wherein emotions are seldom expressed, unless of course they are ones of frustration or anger. But nobody, I repeat nobody, can understand a man better than another man. After all, how would a man be able to express to a woman what makes them happy, what scares them, frustrates them, or bothers them in any way? It’s not that women are incapable of understanding it. It’s just that most men, including myself, are incapable of expressing ourselves.

And that inability to express their emotions can only feel relatable to someone who’s been in their shoes. Someone who might lack sensitivity at times, someone who has the best of intentions but screws things over while trying to be cautious, someone who shares their insecurities and feels just as vulnerable as them to lay them bare– someone who is just as imperfect as them. Who else would it be but another man, especially their sons. That’s what makes a father-son bond truly special. And quite a few brands have understood this and captured the often tumultuous, bitter-sweet bond between fathers and sons.

So, here we are with 5 heartwarming Father’s Day commercials from yesteryear that put the spotlight on this one-of-a-kind relationship and celebrate it like none other. Let’s take a look at these.

1. HealthOK Tablets: Express The Tough Love (2021)

While daughters are often treated like little princesses by most fathers, the same affection isn’t overtly visible for the sons. On the surface, the father-son relationship often feels somewhat cold. It is almost as if fathers get distant as their sons grow up. However, as distant as they might be, the love and affection always stays.

This 2021 advert follows the unique dynamics of a father-son relationship, wherein frustration and anger is often palpable but love seems somewhat subdued. The same emotions of affection that sons can easily express towards their mothers and fathers towards their daughters seem almost absent when it’s just the two of them, fathers and sons, in the equation– so much so that even a warm hug feels like an impossibility.

However, beneath their tough, taciturn demeanor lies an endless supply of love, care, and attachment, which, unfortunately, gets expressed more often in one another’s absence, as seen in this spot. Nevertheless, as elusive as the warmth between a father and son may be, what truly matters is that it doesn’t fade away– ever!

2. Ultra Tech Cement: The Build Our Character (2022)

Children may not like a strict father but they play a critical role in positively shaping up their lives. This 100-second spot shows that while fathers might seem like the most fastidious creatures on earth, their ability to withhold appreciation for their children indirectly pushes them to strive for improvement.

The ad follows a strict father who often lectures his son on the importance of properly utilizing his time and money. So, when the son suggests that they buy a new car since he’s been promoted at his job, his father asks him to save up so that he can build something even bigger. And he does exactly that by building his family a home. And that’s when the ever-elusive appreciation from this father finally comes.

You see, they might not praise you for winning a race at the school– that appreciation comes when you win at life!

3. Dawlance: Abbu Ki Acchi Aadatein (2023)

The biggest irony of a father-son relationship is that by the time a son realizes that his father was right, he has a son who thinks he is wrong. This beautiful 2023 spot by the Pakistani home appliances brand Dawlance titled ‘Abbu Ki Acchi Aadatein’, which translates as ‘My Father’s Good Habits’ throws the spotlight on how some of our father’s habits, which we once considered to be pointless, start making sense over time.

The ad showcases a young man feeling startled by some of his father’s actions like haggling with shopkeepers over prices, getting frustrated over ACs and fans running if there wasn’t anybody in the room, and ensuring that the refrigerator’s door remained shut if it wasn’t being used. However, once his father passes away and the onus of paying electricity and other bills fall on his shoulders, he realizes that his father was right in trying to save money.

That’s what fathers do– teach you a thing or two even when they aren’t around!

4. BMW: What Drives You? (2017)

Honestly, I don’t know if this is indeed a BMW ad since I couldn’t find it on their YouTube channel. But considering how beautifully this spot explores the bond between a father and his son, I felt like it surely deserved to be included in this blog.

The ad opens with a handicapped race car driver, Rick Winston, looking at his old pictures and reminiscing about his days on the racing track. His son, who’s probably just turned 18, has received his driving license. And guess what he does next. He takes his father back out on the track, where the old man relives those experiences from his days on the racing track with his son on his side.

It's a universal reminder that sometimes our fathers need us just as much as we need them.

5. Google: The Hero– A Bollywood Story (2016)

And here’s the best Father’s Day advert that I have seen so far. There are only a few things in the world that epitomize hope, dreams and magic and one of them is cinema. And in life, like in movies, some dreams come true, some fall through, and some just take longer.

The ad opens with a woman discussing with her son where they would live now that her husband has retired, to which her son says that they would obviously live with him in Mumbai. But his mother tells him that his father would never go to Mumbai with them due to a failed Bollywood dream forty years ago.

The son, along with his mother, then hatches a genius plan that sees the father-son duo traversing across the length and breadth of India as they go around recreating iconic scenes from Bollywood movies, one after another. However, that’s not what the plan was all about as we get to see at the end of this brilliant 6-minute ad.

Watch the ad to find out how exactly the son helped his father finally live the Bollywood dream all those years later.

Wrapping Up

And that's a wrap of some of the most heartwarming Father’s Day commercials. Unlike many other relationships, the bond between a father and son is rarely built on grand declarations of love or emotional conversations. More often than not, it is forged through shared experiences, silent sacrifices, tough lessons, occasional disagreements, and a mutual understanding that doesn't always need words. It can be frustrating, complicated, and even distant at times, but it remains one of the most enduring relationships a man will ever have.

Perhaps that's why these commercials resonate so deeply. They capture the things that fathers and sons often struggle to say out loud– the pride, admiration, gratitude, concern, and love that exist beneath their stoic exteriors. And in doing so, they remind us that while fathers and sons may not always express their emotions, they feel them just as intensely.

With Father's Day around the corner, it is worth taking a moment to appreciate the men who taught us life's toughest lessons, often without realizing they were teaching them. And if you're fortunate enough to still have your father around, perhaps now is as good a time as any to tell him what neither of you may have found easy to say all these years.

We’ll be back with more lovely ad campaigns for you. Till then, stay tuned!
