5 Powerful Anti-Ageism Commercials That Honored Age & Experience

The advertising industry has often been accused of portraying the elderly in a poor and caricaturish manner. From casual, distasteful remarks to insulting stereotypes, the older generation has seen it all and still does in ad campaigns. Make no mistake— I don’t believe people should be respected merely because of their age; even foolish people get old! But everyone deserves to be shown some dignity, especially if they are going to be represented in ad campaigns that are going to be plastered all over TV and the internet. Thankfully, brands are gradually realizing that and launching commercials to smash old-age-related stereotypes.

So, here we are with 5 anti-ageism commercials that proved that brilliance has no expiry date and old will always remain gold!

1. Australian Human Rights Commission: Power of Oldness (2014)

Old people are often subtly mocked for being a burden on society and seen as not contributing in any way. But such notions are from the truth as seen in this 2014 commercial by the Australian Human Rights Commission.

The ad opens with an old man admitting that he’s old but far from being apologetic about it, he goes on to demonstrate how his age is actually an asset to him and the people around him. From leveraging his experience to soothe a crying baby to using his wisdom to contribute handsomely to the economy, he outlines how people his age are strong pillars of support in any society.

However, while all of this sounds good, the audience is soon brought back to reality with the old man being outrightly rejected from a job for being on the wrong side of age.

The sombre ending of the advert reminds one and all that it’s time that we start valuing the immense experience that the elderly carry with them and try to seek ways to benefit from their vast experience.

2. New York City Department for the Aging: Ageless (2021)

So, how do you define being ageless? This powerful 30-second spot by New York City’s support and information department for the elderly has some answers. And boy, are they some soul-stirring responses?

The ad opens by asking the viewers to define ‘ageless’ and goes on to feature a few old folks- all happy, confident, and ready to play the second innings of their lives. The ad then associates the term ‘ageless’ with different qualities ranging from passion and strength to drive and resilience.

Honestly, I couldn’t agree more with those equivalences.

3. AARP: Disrupt Ageing (2016)

People are often sidelined in job interviews for being too old, and nobody ever seems to bat an eye at this blatant discrimination. But what happens when this is brought to the outside world? We are about to find out in this impressive spot by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

The ad begins with a signboard in front of a food truck that clearly states that they wouldn’t be serving anyone over 40. While some people below that threshold happily walk away after being served, many take umbrage at such a glaring form of discrimination.

While I am not sure if such social experiments can ever fully tackle the issue of age-related discrimination, every person influenced by them is a victory, however small that may be! And by the looks of it, this advert did manage to influence quite a few people, including myself!

4. Federation Against Ageism Towards Ad Creatives (FAAAC): The Last March Of An Ad Creative (2023)

While age-related discrimination is a bitter truth almost everywhere, it manifests itself in even uglier forms in the advertising industry, with older and experienced creatives often being sidelined in favor of younger creatives, who are deemed to enrich the company with more innovative ideas.

This advert exposes the ugly truth about ageism in advertising and what a creative career in the industry is actually like. The spot succinctly raises awareness about the pitfalls of a career in advertising, particularly regarding age discrimination, and also seeks to warn younger talent about these issues.

If you fancy a career in the advertising space, this ad is a must-watch for you.

5. AARP: The New American Workers (1989)

Educated, bright, flexible, full of energy, and eager to learn— those qualities in a workforce are any employer’s dream.

But what happens if such a workforce were to be made of a bunch of old people with gray and receding hairlines? Will employers judge them by their ability or their date of birth?

As optimistic as I wish to be, I don’t think the answer to that question lies in the affirmative!

Wrapping Up

And that’s a wrap of some of the most impactful anti-ageing commercials. Ageism remains a bitter truth, and the advertising world remains one of its biggest victims. Thankfully, sincere efforts are being made from within the industry to tackle this issue. Hopefully, in the near future, we’ll have resolved it completely.

But until that happens, we will continue to bring such ad campaigns to you to raise awareness regarding this.

We’ll be back with more such awesome adverts for you. Till then, stay tuned!
