1. ByteDance Pushes Recruitment of Fresh Robotics Talent as AI Remains a Priority



ByteDance has ramped up recruitment of fresh talent for robotics development, as a growing number of artificial intelligence (AI) engineers are being lured by high pay to work in the fast-evolving sector.

The more than 10 job vacancies recently posted on ByteDance’s website included two directors responsible for robot products and for hardware-embedded AI models. The Beijing-based unicorn also posted vacancies for roles involving “robot motion control algorithms”, “performance optimisation for embodied intelligence reasoning” and “robot multimodal model”, among others.


2. Trump to Start TikTok Sale Talks With China, He Says, With Deal 'Pretty Much’ Reached



Donald Trump has said he will soon start talking to China about a possible TikTok deal. The United States president said the US “pretty much” had a deal on the sale of the TikTok short-video app.

Trump also said he might visit Xi Jinping in China or the Chinese leader may visit the US. in June, the two leaders invited each other to visit their respective countries. Recently, Trump also extended a deadline to 17 September for China-based ByteDance to divest the US assets of TikTok, a social media app with 170 million users in the US.


3. TikTok Shop Launches In Japan as App Faces Uncertainty in US



TikTok has launched its e-commerce platform in Japan, enabling users to directly buy products featured in videos, as the app continues to face an uncertain future in the US.

TikTok Shop’s launch in Japan confirms reports that the popular short-video app is seeking to diversify its global footprint while reducing its reliance on the US market, as President Donald Trump has demanded the app’s US operations be sold to American investors. Japan is TikTok Shop’s 17th market, following launches in the US, the UK, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam, among others.


4. Taobao’s Daily Orders Soar as China’s Instant Ecommerce War Heats Up



Alibaba Group Holding is seeing a rapid acceleration in the volume of on-demand delivery transactions, the latest sign of growing rivalry with Meituan and JD.com in China’s instant e-commerce market.

Combined daily orders on Taobao Instant Commerce – the company’s latest push into on-demand delivery – and food delivery app Ele.me, reached 80 million, Taobao said on its official WeChat account. Daily active users on Taobao Instant Commerce surpassed 200 million. The figures were released a day after Meituan, Alibaba’s bigger rival in the on-demand delivery sector, announced it had achieved record orders for its instant delivery service.


5. Meituan Captures Record Orders as Ecommerce War Fuels Demand for Delivery



Meituan said daily transaction volume on its dominant on-demand delivery reached an all-time high since its inception in 2010, briefly crashing its platform as online purchases surged amid a fresh round of price war among China’s e-commerce leaders.

Daily orders of food and retail goods for its instant delivery service surpassed 120 million on Saturday, according to the company, with food orders accounting for 100 million or 83 percent of them. Meituan’s delivery services suffered a technical breakdown in certain areas during the day as “the number of user orders exceeded the historical peak”, triggering temporary protective measures from its servers, Meituan said in a statement. The problem was resolved within hours, it added.


6. France Fines Shein US$47 Million for ‘Deceptive’ Pricing Amid EU Scrutiny



The French government has fined online retailer Shein €40 million (US$47 million) for “deceptive marketing practices” and incomplete information about the environmental impact of its products.

The penalty was announced just days after a European Union official said that he was “deeply concerned” about the millions of small parcels entering the region every day, many from Chinese-founded platforms like Shein and Temu. The fine by France’s Ministry of Economy followed investigations conducted between October 1, 2022, and August 31, 2023, which found that Shein’s French entity, Infinite Style E-commerce, “had misled consumers about the reality of the reductions available to them”, according to a statement on the authority’s website.


7. Apple’s China iPhone Sales Face Headwinds in Second Half



Apple’s iPhone sales in China grew in the second quarter of this year for the first time in two years, according to Counterpoint Research, marking a positive sign for the tech giant as it works to revive its business in one of its most important markets.

Counterpoint Research data shows that iPhone sales in China rose 8% year-on-year in the three months ending June. This is the first time Apple has recorded growth in the region since the second quarter of 2023. The return to growth will be a relief for investors, who have seen Apple’s stock slide by about 15% this year amid various challenges.
