Hi folks, we are back with our weekly edition of China’s Digital Digest, wherein we bring you weekly updates on China’s digital space. The report takes a quick glance at China’s complex and rapidly evolving social media landscape by providing updates on the latest happenings across the social media industry. Here are the major highlights of the report.
1. Lancôme And HelloRide Launch UV-Sensitive Bikes to Beat The Summer Sun
HelloRide has rolled out a limited-edition white bike in collaboration with Lancôme UV Expert, designed to keep rides cooler and safer under the sun.

From July 21 to 31, 400 co-branded bikes will appear across Shanghai. During the campaign, users who post on Rednote with the official hashtag can enter to win a full-size bottle of Lancôme UV Expert sunscreen. Riders can also unlock free ride passes through the HelloRide app, making sun-safe commuting a breeze.
2. McDonald’s Marks China’s Hottest Day With a Large Fries Giveaway
To celebrate the hottest day on the Chinese solar calendar—Greater Heat (大暑)—McDonald’s is bringing back its annual “Large Fries Day (大薯日),” playing on the homophone as both are pronounced “da shu” in Mandarin.

This year’s campaign, themed “Fries Are All You Need,” offers seven straight days of large fries for just 7 RMB (about 0.98 USD), along with limited-edition merch and a themed pop-up that brings the potato party to life. In Shanghai, McDonald’s transformed Julu Road into a “Large Fries Convenience Store” pop-up. The space features a “fresh potato zone” with real spuds from McDonald’s farms, educational displays about fry quality, and iconic merch from past Large Fries Day campaigns—bringing fans into an all-fries-everything world.
3. LABUBU Teams up With GODIVA to Launch Ice Cream Series
LABUBU has teamed up with GODIVA to launch its first-ever ice cream line, inspired by artist Kasing Lung‘s iconic illustrations.

The series features three classic chocolate flavors, each layered with crunchy pistachio bread crumbs for added texture. Every scoop comes with a custom LABUBU-shaped spoon and foldable 3D packaging, making the character part of the experience from the first bite. The collection also includes two limited-edition milkshakes.
4. China’s Market Regulator Summons Alibaba, Meituan, JD Amid Delivery War
China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) summoned major online food delivery platforms – Alibaba Group Holding’s Ele.me, Meituan, and JD.com – urging them to engage in “rational” competition amid a prolonged price war.

The meeting aimed to “further regulate promotion behaviours, encourage rational competition, and foster a healthy ecosystem and win-win situation for consumers, merchants, delivery riders, and platform operators”, the regulator said in an announcement. The SAMR said those companies must adhere to e-commerce, anti-unfair competition, and food safety laws, and must take on their responsibilities.
5. Alibaba’s ‘Super Saturdays’ Event to Heat up China’s On-Demand Delivery Market
Alibaba Group Holding will roll out a programme called “Super Saturdays” over the next 100 days to lure more consumers to its platform, while escalating a price war against Meituan and JD.com in the mainland’s on-demand delivery services market.

Under Alibaba’s instant commerce brand Taobao Shangou, “Super Saturdays” would offer consumers up to 188 yuan (US$26) in subsidies for the purchase and delivery of low-cost goods such as milk tea and breakfast meals. Alibaba’s latest programme reflects the intensifying price war in China’s quick delivery services market, where aggressive discounts and freebies are the norm.
