Hi folks, we are back with our weekly edition of China’s Digital Digest, wherein we bring you weekly updates on China’s digital space. The report takes a quick glance at China’s complex and rapidly evolving social media landscape by providing updates on the latest happenings across the social media industry. Here are the major highlights of the report.

1. Beijing Vows to Protect Chinese Firms After EU Hits Alibaba Unit With Fine

Beijing has expressed “strong dissatisfaction and serious concern”, urging the European Union to treat Chinese companies fairly after Brussels slapped e-commerce platform AliExpress with a €550 million (US$630 million) fine for breaching the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA).

The ministry urged Brussels to “stop exploiting ambiguities in legal provisions to abuse its discretionary powers”. The ministry also vowed that Beijing would firmly back the firms in defending their rights through legal action, and would take “forceful measures” to safeguard their interests. Alibaba Group, which owns AliExpress, said it would fight the decision. In a statement after Brussels announced the fine, the group described the penalty as “disproportionate” and said it did not reflect the “significant, proactive enhancements” that the company had committed to undertake.

2. Taobao Wins Top French Design Award for Delivery Rider Uniform

Taobao, Alibaba’s instant commerce and on-demand delivery service that was revamped last year, won a top French Design Award prize on Friday for its delivery worker uniform design.

This marks the first time a uniform has received the Gold Award in the prize’s 11-year history. According to the award’s organisers, the design sets a new standard for safety, comfort and performance for delivery riders, while helping the workforce build a stronger sense of dignity and identity. Jury member Andrea Mocellin, an independent automotive and aviation designer, also praised the design for humanising the profession while “improving both the wearer’s confidence and public perception”. The design reflects a growing emphasis in Chinese society on improving conditions for the country’s roughly 200 million gig workers, after viral videos of exhausted delivery riders breaking down on the job sparked public outcry. The sector has absorbed many of the country’s college graduates and laid-off employees as the economy continues to struggle.

3. ByteDance Releases Seed Audio 1.0

The ByteDance Seed team has released Seed Audio 1.0, a comprehensive audio creation model that unifies speech, sound effects, and ambient sound generation within a single framework to produce cinema-grade audio content end-to-end. The model marks ByteDance entry into the AI audio generation space, joining a competitive field that includes ElevenLabs text-to-speech and Meta AudioBox, with a distinctive focus on precise temporal control and multi-element orchestration within a single generation pass.

The core technical innovation is unified temporal orchestration. A single prompt can simultaneously specify dialogue with specific emotional delivery, precise sound effects synchronized to narrative events, and ambient background sound establishing environment and mood, all sequenced along a shared timeline. This eliminates the traditional post-production workflow of generating speech, sound effects, and ambience separately and manually mixing them. The model outputs a complete audio track with all elements already aligned to the intended timing, significantly reducing the iteration cycles in professional audio production.

4. Tencent WorkBuddy APP Launches on HarmonyOS, iOS, and Android Simultaneously

Tencent has officially released the WorkBuddy APP simultaneously on iOS, Android, and HarmonyOS, making it the first native AI agent application to land on Huawei HarmonyOS ecosystem. The app brings the desktop WorkBuddy agent capabilities to mobile form factors, supporting both direct connection to local computers and cloud-based independent operation, significantly expanding the reach of Tencent AI productivity tools.

The dual-mode architecture is the key differentiator. In computer-connected mode, the app links directly to the user desktop WorkBuddy instance, providing full access to desktop capabilities including file system operations, application control, and long-running automation tasks. In cloud work mode, the app operates independently with most core desktop features including Skills integration, expert consultations, automated scheduled tasks, output downloading and sharing, and project management, connected through Tencent Docs and a knowledge base for data access.

5. Tencent Launches Miora, Its First Full-Stack Design Agent Platform

Tencent has quietly launched Miora, its first dedicated design agent platform, now fully open to all users after an invite-only beta period. The platform, accessible at miora.design, is built by the same WorkBuddy team behind Tencent enterprise AI agent ecosystem, extending the company AI product portfolio from coding and work agents into creative design. Miora covers five design domains: brand design, film and creative, e-commerce advertising, interactive games, and web applications, each with tailored skill templates and workflows.

The interface follows the WorkBuddy design pattern with notable polish. A left sidebar houses creation, inspiration, skills, and memory modules. The central chat area accepts natural language design requests. A scene mode switcher next to Miora mascot allows instant domain switching that dynamically updates the shortcut template library beneath. At the bottom, a configuration panel reveals two model tiers: the agent base model with three depth levels Standard for simple tasks, Pro for most use cases, and Max for complex brand VI projects and a separate multimodal generation panel where users can independently select specific image, video, UI, and 3D models including GPT-image-2, Seedance 2.0, Kling, Vidu Q3, and others.

6. China Clears Mobile AI Models, Paving Way for Apple Intelligence

China has granted regulatory approval to seven mobile artificial intelligence services, including Apple Intelligence and Samsung Galaxy AI, paving the way for the rollout of advanced on-device features in the world's largest smartphone market.

The list published by the Cyberspace Administration of China marks the first time the internet watchdog has cleared AI models specifically tailored for smartphones, with domestic manufacturers Huawei Technologies Co., Xiaomi Corp., Oppo, Vivo and Nubia also securing approvals. The timing suggests September 2026 will see a wave of AI smartphone launches, as multiple brands prepare their first fully compliant AI phone product lines. Industry analysts noted that the centralized filing marks accelerated regulatory standardization for on-device AI, with both domestic and international brands simultaneously achieving compliance. This creates a level playing field where regulation no longer differentiates between Chinese and foreign brands.
