Welcome to Social Media Buzz Weekly, your weekly bulletin of the latest social media updates. With the social media landscape evolving with each passing day, it can be challenging to keep a tab on the rapid developments. Well, not anymore, as we have taken it upon ourselves to keep you abreast of every happening in the social media space.

So, without any further ado, let’s look at some of the most significant developments from the last week in the world of social media.

1. Meta Gains DPC Approval To Use EU User Data for AI Training

Meta has cleared another hurdle in its push to expand access to its AI tools, with the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) confirming that it has approved Meta’s updated approach to incorporating EU user data into its AI models.

ree

Meta has faced significant opposition to its AI training plans in Europe, with the EU Commission forcing it to delay its AI roll-out in the region last year, due to concerns around data usage, and a lack of user consent for such. Meta has now upgraded its AI data permissions, in line with advice from European authorities, with the approval of the DPC clearing the way for it to incorporate EU user data into its AI models.

2. TikTok Faces More Scrutiny in Europe

The European Commission is intensifying its scrutiny of TikTok amid growing concern over “SkinnyTok” — an algorithm-driven content stream that promotes extreme thinness and potentially harmful eating habits.

ree

The trend, which is often amplified by TikTok’s algorithm, sees youngsters sharing sometimes unrealistic body and diet goals. The EU Commission is now exploring the potential impacts of this trend, which could result in further restrictions on the content that TikTok can amplify, and potentially, its actual algorithmic workings in this respect.

3. TikTok Adds a Dedicated AI Assistant for In-App Sellers

TikTok has added an AI-powered chatbot tool into its Seller Center product management platform, which is wholly dedicated to providing information for brands looking to promote and sell products in the app.

ree

TikTok’s “Seller Assistant” is now available within TikTok’s commerce management tools, providing immediate support to help sellers maximize their in-app product displays. The AI-powered tool will be able to provide a range of pointers on your TikTok product listings, including advice on optimal listing approaches, and tips on how to maximize visibility. Also, it will give users immediate access to key insights and performance data along with personalized, context-aware recommendations on marketing approaches.

4. TikTok Expands Music Options With SoundCloud Integration

TikTok has added another music discovery element, with SoundCloud now being integrated into TikTok’s “Add to Music” feature, providing more opportunities for TikTok users to discover emerging artists.

ree

With “Add to Music,” TikTok users can easily save songs they find in the app to their preferred music streaming service. And now, SoundCloud will be included in that mix, which will not only enable more music connection options, but will provide more opportunities for non-label artists to expand their listenership. TikTok notes that this also coincides with the launch of SoundCloud’s “Move to Music” feature, which enables users to transfer their music libraries from other music platforms to SoundCloud.

5. Instagram Adds New DM Options, Including Voice Clip Transcription

Instagram is adding text transcription of voice messages in DMs, so that you can still engage with your messages in any environment.

ree

Now, when you receive an audio clip in a DM, you’ll also have the option to transcribe it in-stream, via a “View transcription” button below the audio wave. It could be a handy addition, providing another means to interact with DM content. Also on voice messages, Instagram’s extending the maximum length of audio clips in DMs from 1 minute to 5 minutes.

6. Snapchat Opens New Office in Paris as Part of Expanded EU Business Push

Snapchat has opened a new office in Paris, while it’s also expanding its relationships with local AR artists and creators to reinforce its leadership on this element.

ree

The opening of this new 4,000-square-meter office in the heart of Paris marks a new milestone for Snap and its more than 100 employees in France, designed to foster synergy and creativity within its teams. Around 60% of Snap’s revenue comes from the North American market, with just 18% coming from Europe. That’s despite Snap seeing an almost equal number of users in each of these markets, with the majority of Snap’s usage now coming from Asia, and India specifically.

7. X Suffers Major Outages After Fire in US Data Center

X has suffered a series of outages, which may or may not be linked to a significant fire in one of its data centers.

ree

Emergency services recently attended a major fire at an Oregon data center owned by X. The fire was reportedly caused by a battery issue, with the impacts then cascading throughout X’s network, setting off a series of outages and issues. Indeed, many users reported that they were unable to log in, while new user sign-ups were also impacted.

8. LinkedIn Provides More Ad Engagement Insight in Revenue Attribution Report

LinkedIn is looking to provide marketers with expanded insight into how their campaigns influence company purchases, with a new addition to its Revenue Attribution Report that will show how different people from a target company have engaged with your ads.

ree

The expanded report will provide more specific insight into how people from a target company interact with your ads, so you can get a better understanding of the broader purchase journey. So, now when any LinkedIn user from a target company engages with your ad, LinkedIn will track that engagement, providing more insight into the full path to purchase, and how many direct engagements occur within that chain.
