Welcome to Social Media Buzz Weekly, your weekly bulletin of the latest social media updates. With the social media landscape evolving with each passing day, it can be challenging to keep a tab on the rapid developments. Well, not anymore, as we have taken it upon ourselves to keep you abreast of every happening in the social media space.

So, without any further ado, let’s look at some of the most significant developments from the last week in the world of social media.

1. Meta Launches Opportunity Score to All Advertisers

After expanding the rollout of its “Opportunity Score” element in Meta Ads Manager last month, Meta is now making its new optimization metric available to all advertisers, providing more opportunities to optimize and maximize your Meta ad efforts.

Meta’s Opportunity Score provides a 0-100 point summary as to how well your campaign is set up to maximize performance. The process also provides immediate feedback on campaign set-up, including simple updates that you can implement to potentially improve performance.

2. Trump Indicates He Will Grant TikTok Another Extension

President Donald Trump has once again indicated that he’ll approve yet another extension, in order to ensure that TikTok remains available in the U.S.

To recap, in April last year, the U.S. Senate approved the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,” which, among other measures, included the provision that TikTok must be sold into U.S. ownership in order to remain in operation in the region. The final vote on the bill was 79 to 18 in favor.

3. TikTok Rolls Out More Ways To Control Content Recommendations

TikTok is rolling out some new control options for your main “For You” feed, which will give users more ways to customize their TikTok stream to better align with their content preferences.

Firstly, TikTok has announced that it is rolling out its “Manage Topics” option to all users, giving you an easy way to tell TikTok what you’re more interested in, via a range of topic sliders. TikTok is also rolling out AI-powered “Smart Keyword Filters” which will help you limit content you don’t want to see at all in the app.

4. TikTok Launches New Platform to Help Musicians Maximize Their In-App Presence

TikTok has announced the launch of a new “TikTok for Artists” platform for musicians, which will help individuals and bands manage their in-app presence, with enhanced data and insight tools to help them maximize their in-app presence.

TikTok’s new artists dashboard provides a range of insights into content performance, community growth, and more. It’s also got a promotions element, which includes pre-release campaigns that can be launched from the platform itself. Through pre-release campaigns, fans will be able to pre-save an album or track directly to their Spotify or Apple Music library, enhancing connection between TikTok and full content.

5. TikTok Reaches 30M UK Users

According to TikTok, the app now serves over 30 million U.K. users, making this its single biggest European user market.

TikTok also says that there are now over 1.5 million British businesses on TikTok, contributing £1.6 billion to the U.K. economy ($US2.17 billion), while the company itself employs 3,000 U.K. employees. British officials have ruled out a full ban of TikTok, following the lead of the U.S., though if TikTok is eventually blocked by U.S. authorities, that could change their approach in this respect.

6. Instagram Announces Latest Updates for Edits App, Including More Transition Effects

Instagram continues to roll out more updates for its new Edits app, with another set of new creative tools now available in the video customization platform.

The latest update includes three new additions. First, the app now offers more transition effects, such as 'Zoom Ripple' and 'Vertical Stretch,' increasing the total number of transitions to 35. These effects can be applied at cut points between clips. Second, the update introduces improved track handle sensitivity, enabling users to make more precise video cuts by tapping the edges of a clip within the editing sequence. Lastly, users can now apply volume adjustments across all clips in a project simultaneously. This feature is designed to help maintain consistent audio levels throughout edited videos.

7. Threads Continues To See Strong Download Momentum in May

Threads continues to hold its place in the app download charts, with Meta’s Twitter replicant remaining at 8th spot in the list, and seeing an increase in overall download volume in May.

Threads saw 23 million downloads across iOS and Android in May, which is up from 22 million April, and at the same level that the app saw in March. Threads is now up to 350 million monthly active users, and gaining quickly on X, which reported in March that it’s now up to 600 million monthly actives, an increase of 50 million year-over-year.

8. Instagram Says Trial Reels Have Helped Creators Significantly Increase Reach

Instagram’s trial Reels have been available for just six months now, and IG is keen to get more creators trying out its audience sampling feature, in order to help boost content performance.

Trial Reels are shown to a selection of users who don’t follow your profile, which can give you early insight into the likely performance of your Reel. To be clear, trial Reels are not displayed to your followers, either in the main Feed or via the Reels tab. The idea is that this gives you an unbiased assessment of content quality, while also helping you potentially reach a broader audience.

9. Instagram Is Testing an In-App Teleprompter Feature for Edits

Instagram is developing a new, in-app teleprompter display within its new Edits app, in order to help creators present to camera in a more natural and engaging way.

Edits will soon have an in-stream rolling text display option, which will present your script on-screen. Users will be able to adjust the speed at which the words are displayed before them, as well as the size of the text. This could make your videos feel more natural, increasing their fluidity in presentation.

10. Snap Adds New Gaming and Bitmoji Creation Elements to Lens Studio

Snapchat is adding some new tools to its Lens Studio creation platform, including Bitmoji cutomization options, game assets, and more.

Snap’s new “Bitmoji Suite” within Lens Studio will enable developers to build custom Bitmoji experiences, including outfit creation, unique character animation, and more. Snap is also adding new game creation elements, including turn-based controls, updated character control options, and updates to its “Leaderboard” back-end. That’ll make it easier for developers to build their own custom game experiences in the app, while it’s also adding new templates for start and end screens, and more friend metrics.

11. Snapchat Launches Apple Watch App

Snapchat has added a new way for users to stay in touch with conversations in the app, with a new Snapchat app for Apple Watch, which will be able to display messages, and enable simple response, from your device.

As with regular DMs on Apple Watch, you’ll now also be able to view and respond to Snapchat messages, ensuring that you’re always connected. Well, as long as you’re within a certain radius of your iPhone, at least. There are reportedly over 100 million Apple Watch users worldwide, and around 30 million Apple Watch in the U.S. alone, while Snapchat now has over 900 million monthly actives.

12. Snapchat Launches Standalone Lens Studio Mobile App

Snapchat has launched a new standalone Lens Studio mobile app, which aims to make it easier for people to build their own AR experiences.

Snap’s Lens Studio app aims to provide a simplified effects creation flow, including templates and tools that will enable more people, even those without developer experience, to build custom in-app experiences. It’s another step towards enabling broader creative expression with advanced digital tools, which has also been accelerated by generative AI apps and functions that can generate code for you based on plain language text prompts.

13. X Reforms API Pricing as It Seeks More Revenue Options

According to reports, X has started informing its top-tier Enterprise API subscribers that it will soon shift away from an access pricing model, to a revenue share one instead, which will see X take a percentage of any money made by projects that utilize its data.

X recently began sending out emails to paid subscribers of its Enterprise API plans, which start at $42,000 per month, informing them of the upcoming change. The new API pricing scheme is scheduled to go into effect on July 1. X has not yet shared final details about the change, such as exactly what percentage the revenue share model will be, with its customers.

14. X Adds Verification Explainers To Avoid EU Fines

X has added a new overview of what checkmarks in the app now actually represent, as EU investigators continue to examine the app’s change in approach on verification, and whether it violates the EU Digital Services Act (DSA).

Last year, then EU Commissioner Thierry Breton publicly criticized X’s change to its verification system, saying that X’s premium subscription package is deceptive, and infringes DSA regulations. More specifically, the EU Commission found that in enabling users to buy blue ticks, that’s potentially created a new vector for the promotion of misinformation, because the appearance of a check mark adds legitimacy to an account, as established by Twitter’s previous verification system.

15. LinkedIn Adds More Video Ad Options, Including ‘First Impression Ads’

LinkedIn has announced some new video ad options, including “First Impression Ads,” which offer more opportunity to grab attention, as well as expanded CTV Ads capabilities.

LinkedIn’s First Impression Ads are a full-screen, vertical video format for single-day campaigns, which ensures that your promotion is the first ad that a target member sees on a given day. It is also rolling out a similar “Reserved Ads” offering for other forms of Sponsored Content, which will ensure that your Thought Leader Ads, Single Image Ads and Document Ads are also displayed in the first ad slot in the feed. Moreover, it’s adding some new capabilities to its Connected TV (CTV) Select ad offering, which provides expanded opportunity to display your LinkedIn promotions on a single publisher’s streaming portfolio.
