With the social media landscape evolving with each passing day, it can be challenging to keep a tab on the rapid developments. Well, not anymore, as we have taken it upon ourselves to keep you abreast of every happening in the social media space.
So, without any further ado, let’s look at some of the most significant developments from the last week in the world of social media.
1. Meta Adds Copyright Check Into the Reels Composer on Facebook
Meta has added a new “Copyright Check” option within the Reels composer tools, which is able to check the content of your Reel for possible violations before you publish.

As per Meta, if you turn on copyright check, your eligible reels will be scanned for copyrighted content. If copyright content is found, your reels will be held for 1 hour to allow you to correct any issues before your reel is shown to others. Meta also noted that if you don’t turn this on, your Reel will still be copyright checked after publication, and “you may be subject to rights holders’ actions if a match is found.
2. Meta Is Gifting Verified To Selected Creators
Over the last few months, Meta has been running a program which includes gifting Meta Verified to selected creators.

Meta Verified offers creators enhanced support, more account protection, and add-on profile elements, in addition to a blue checkmark to signify identity in the app. Meta is pitching this as a reward for “valued creators,” with its identity verification elements, in particular, helping to enhance their in-app experience.
3. TikTok Is Reportedly Developing a US-Only Version of the App
According to certain media reports, TikTok is in the midst of developing a new U.S.-only version of the app, as it closes in on a deal with a U.S. partner, in line with the requirements of the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act.”

The U.S.-only version of TikTok is currently being referred to as “M2” internally, and is scheduled to launch in early September. American users will then be required to download this updated, spun-off version of the app to keep using TikTok, though they’ll have till March 2026 to do so.
4. TikTok Announces Partnership With Tomorrowland Music Festival
TikTok has announced a new partnership with electronic music festival Tomorrowland, which will see the app host a range of exclusive content throughout the event.

Tomorrowland hosts a range of music festivals throughout Europe, with its headline event for 2025 being held in Belgium next month. And during the festival, TikTok will host live streams of performances, provide behind-the-scenes access, showcase artist and creator collaborations, and more.
5. TikTok Cuts Staff as Its Shopping Push Fails To Reach Targets
TikTok has initiated a third round of layoffs in its Shop department, which comes after the platform failed to meet its performance goals in 2024.

TikTok has repeatedly noted that its U.S. sales are rising, with the app reporting a 3x increase in sales on Black Friday last year. For the full year 2024, TikTok reportedly generated around $US30 billion in total GMV, up significantly on 2023.
6. Edits Gets More Features To Help Manage Video Projects
Instagram has announced a new round of features for the “Ideas” tab in the app, which are designed to help creators keep track of their inspirations for future projects.

These features include the ability to save audio within Ideas, leave sticky notes on audios you want to create with, mark stickies as done, and filter stickies by status (e.g. ‘to-do’, done, or all) or sort by last edited, date created, or color. With more features coming to Edits every week, it’s fast becoming a must-have tool for all creators, of all kinds, increasing your creative capacity, with a focus on short video clips.
7. Snapchat Reaches 250M Users in India
Snapchat has reached a new usage milestone in India, with the app now up to 250 million Indian users.

That means that India is now Snap’s biggest user market, with the nation making up more than a quarter of Snap’s overall audience. Snapchat says that 90% of its Indian audience is aged between 13 and 34, while on usage, 80% of its Indian users engage with its AR elements daily. India is also Snap’s second-largest AR developer market.
8. Snapchat Launches Interactive Art Project at the Palace of Versailles
Snapchat has announced a new in-app art project, in partnership with the Palace of Versailles, which aims to provide an interactive historical experience in the grounds of the famous French building.

Snapchat’s new project includes AR activations within the grounds of the palace, providing additional visual elements to enhance the visiting experience. Each station on the map will showcase a dance related to the location, which can be seen through the AR camera. Snapchat has played host to various art installations, as part of its broader push to contribute to emerging culture.
9. X Will Enable AI Bots To Create Community Notes
X is moving to the next stage of its Community Notes fact-checking process, with the addition of “AI Note Writers,” automated bots that can create their own Community Notes, which will then be assessed by human Notes contributors.

X is now enabling developers to build Community Notes creation bots, which can be focused on providing accurate answers within certain niches or elements. The bots will then be able to respond to user calls for a Community Note on a post, and provide contextual information and references to support their assessment.
10. X Wins Free Speech Case in Australia
X has claimed another victory for free speech, this time in Australia, where it has won another challenge against the rulings of the nation’s online safety group.

The case stems from an incident in March last year, in which Australia’s eSafety Commissioner requested that X remove a post that included “degrading” language in criticism of a person who had been appointed by the World Health Organization to serve as an expert on transgender issues. The Commissioner’s ruling came with a potential $800k fine if X refused to comply. In response, X withheld the post in Australia, but it also sought to challenge the order in court, on the grounds that it was an overreach by the Commissioner. X has claimed victory in the case.
