Welcome to Social Media Buzz Weekly, your weekly bulletin of the latest social media updates. With the social media landscape evolving with each passing day, it can be challenging to keep a tab on the rapid developments. Well, not anymore, as we have taken it upon ourselves to keep you abreast of every happening in the social media space.

So, without any further ado, let’s look at some of the most significant developments from the last week in the world of social media.

1. Shorter Video Ads on Facebook Get More Replays via Looping

According to Meta, Facebook video ads that are 30 seconds or less automatically loop. This means your ad replays after it ends, extending its viewing time without any extra effort from you.

ree

The key here is that the looping duration is approximately 90 seconds. So, the shorter your video, the more times it will loop within that timeframe. However, this is all relative to the viewer allowing this to happen, and not skipping or scrolling by as the ad plays over and over. But in some cases, shorter ads will get a lot more plays, which could have inherent branding benefits.

2. Meta Is Banning Political Ads in Europe Due to New EU Regulations

Meta has announced that it will ban all political, electoral and social issue ads in Europe from October this year, due to incoming regulations around political advertising in the region.

ree

The EU’s Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) provision, which will come into effect on October 10th, will require all digital ad platforms to implement enhanced transparency measures for political ads, including information on how they were targeted, and who funded each ad. Meta says that the new restrictions on ad targeting, specifically, will limit how political and social issue advertisers can reach their audiences “and lead to people seeing less relevant ads on our platforms.

3. TikTok Launches ‘Next Up’ Live Singing Competition

In partnership with iHeartRadio, TikTok has announced a new “Next Up: Live Music” singing competition, which will enable wannabe singers to participate via in-app clips and live-streams.

ree

Kicking off July 28th and running through September, the program invites the TikTok community to discover and elevate emerging talent through a dynamic, multi-stage journey. TikTok will invite participants to perform via live-stream performances, and will then judge the winners of each “based on a combination of engagement from the TikTok community and judges’ scores.”

4. TikTok Announces Expanded Live Broadcast Deal With MLS

After seeing success with its Lionel Messi-focused Major League Soccer (MLS) live-stream last year, TikTok’s doing it all over again, this time with four matches that’ll be broadcast live in the app throughout the MLS season.

ree

The most interesting thing here is that TikTok is partnering with Apple TV for the broadcast, and is specifically promoting Apple TV in its announcement. TikTok’s live-stream player spotlight will broadcast a dedicated camera angle that’ll be focused on Lionel Messi throughout the match.

5. Instagram Adds More Protection Features for Young Users

Instagram is adding a new “Safety Tips” prompt within chats, which will provide a quick link to tips on how to spot scammers and take extra care when engaging with strangers. Teen users will also be able to immediately block any account via quick links, while Meta’s also added more information as to when the account was created for context.

ree

Meta has also added a combined block and report option within DMs, as another means to simplify the process. Moreover, it is expanding its protection features for adult-managed teen accounts, and removing all teen accounts, of all types, from recommendations to potentially suspicious adults.

6. Instagram Says It Doesn’t Restrict the Reach of Posts That Include the Term Link in Bio

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has taken the time to address one specific rumor doing the rounds, in relation to the use of “link in bio” in your IG captions and content.

ree

The justifications for a potential restriction make sense, but Mosseri says that there’s no active limitation in place. However, various people have seen decreased reach for posts that include this term, and have conducted their own anecdotal experiments to prove such.

7. Snapchat Adds Home Safe Alerts

Snapchat’s added a new safety feature, with “Home Safe” alerts, which will let your friends in the app know that you’ve arrived home safely whenever activated.

ree

Snap users will be able to activate “Home Safe” within their location settings, so you can switch it on whenever you feel the need to add an extra level of transparency. Users will be able to set their home location by tapping their Bitmoji on the Snap Map, then selecting “My Home.”

8. Elon Outlines Plan to Significantly Expand xAI and Support X’s Operations

xAI is reportedly seeking an additional $12 billion in funding, largely via private investors, to take the project to the next level.

ree

xAI has already raised over $17 billion in funding through six funding rounds, as Elon and Co. have sought to rapidly build out their AI capacity to take on Meta, Google and OpenAI in the race for AI supremacy. Though OpenAI remains Musk’s key target. Spurned by OpenAI rejecting his initial push to become CEO of the project, despite taking millions in donations from him, Musk has made it his personal mission to destroy OpenAI however he can.

9. X Adds More Functionality to Its Updated DM System

X has added some new elements to its updated DM interface, which it’s calling “XChat,” including the ability to search your X DMs, an option to block DMs from a specific user, expanded push notifications, and more.

ree

X is now building out XChat with a range of familiar DM functions, including improved blocking within the chat interface. X has also added typing indicators, enhancing the real time engagement feel. While it’s also added inbox reactions, as well as new push notifications for replies and mentions.

10. Elon Musk Says He Is Bringing Back Vine in AI Form

Elon Musk has claimed that X is going to bring back Vine, though this time in AI form.

ree

He didn’t give a release date, feature details, or explain exactly what “AI form” means. This isn’t the first time Musk has brought up the idea. Since acquiring Twitter in 2022, he has repeatedly mentioned plans to bring Vine back. In a poll on X posted after the acquisition, nearly five million users voted, with close to 70% saying they wanted the app to return.

11. xAI Partners With Kalshi To Offer Stock Insights for Investors

X is partnering with Kalshi to provide Grok insights within Kalshi’s market prediction overviews.

ree

Market analytics platform Kalshi will now be able to display contextual insights from Grok within its stock overviews, providing more data for investors to incorporate into their buying and selling approach. X also announced a similar deal with Polymarket last month, with Polymarket now able to incorporate predictions based on X posts, along with insights from xAI’s Grok system, to provide contextual pointers for its forecasts.

12. X Implements Age Checking Measures To Align With New Laws

X is the latest platform to add age assurance checks, after coming under pressure from Irish regulators over new requirements under Ireland’s Online Safety Code.

ree

Ireland’s new online safety measures, which came into effect this week, stipulate that all video-sharing platforms must implement age-checking measures, to ensure the protection of younger users. That means that Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and X are all now obliged to implement age-checking processes in line with the new law. Companies face fines of up to $US23 million, or 10% of a platform’s annual turnover (whichever is greater) for any breaches.

13. LinkedIn Offers Notion Trial as Part of LinkedIn Premium Subscriptions

LinkedIn has added another benefit to LinkedIn Premium membership, by partnering with Notion to offer six months of free access to Notion’s app for paying members.

ree

That could be an attractive lure for some potential subscribers, though it is only a six-month trial, effectively, and not a permanent LinkedIn Premium addition. LinkedIn Premium is one of the most popular social media add-on offerings. According to reports, LinkedIn Premium currently has around 175 million paying subscribers, which equates to around 18% of the platform’s total member base.
