Welcome to Social Media Buzz Weekly, your weekly bulletin of the latest social media updates. With the social media landscape evolving with each passing day, it can be challenging to keep a tab on the rapid developments. Well, not anymore, as we have taken it upon ourselves to keep you abreast of every happening in the social media space.
So, without any further ado, let’s look at some of the most significant developments from the last week in the world of social media.
1. Meta Announces New Reels and Threads Ad Options
Meta has announced some new ad options at its annual Brand Building Summit, including more options for Reels ads, new ad formats for Threads, and additional qualifiers to help guide its AI-powered ad targeting.

Meta is expanding Reels trending ads to more advertisers, which enables marketers to place their ads alongside popular Reels content. Meta says that Reels trending ads will now be available to all interested advertisers with a Meta sales rep. On Threads, Meta’s also rolling out more ad options, including carousel ads, and expanded image formats. This means that you will soon have more options for your Threads promotions, including 4:5 rendering for single image and video ads.
2. Meta Updates Community Notes, Shares Stats on Usage
Meta has announced some new updates to its variation of Community Notes, which it’s gradually expanding as it learns more about how people are using notes, and how it can improve the notes system.

Meta will now enable users to indicate whether they found a note beneficial or not, via a simple upvote/downvote mechanism. Now, all users will be able to indicate the relative value of each Community Note they come across, by simply tapping the thumbs up or down icons. Like X, Meta will now also enable all users to request a Community Note on a post they come across, which will expand the feedback process. Meta is also rolling out new notifications of when a post that you’ve interacted with gets a Community Note.
3. Facebook Is Getting Rid of Community Chats
Facebook is reportedly informing group admins that Community Chats will be “going away” shortly. Facebook originally launched Community Chats back in 2022, as a means to tap into the rising use of messaging as the key interactive element.

The idea was that this would extend community discussions to Messenger, and help group members link their discussions into their chat apps. But clearly, the concept hasn’t resonated with enough group members.
4. US Government Says TikTok Sell-off Deal Has Been Agreed Upon
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has reported that a framework has been established for a final TikTok sell-off deal, which could see the app sold to an as-yet unnamed U.S. investor, while also enabling its Chinese-owned parent company ByteDance to maintain a key ownership stake.

According Bessent, the proposed deal is “between two private parties,” with the key commercial terms already agreed upon, ahead of TikTok sell-off deadline. U.S. President Donald Trump, meanwhile, has said that he will be meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where he will finalize a TikTok deal, among other discussion points.
5. TikTok Launches Latest Data Center Project in Europe
TikTok has officially launched the next stage of its European data separation project, with construction now underway on a new data center in Kouvola, Finland.

Local officials from Kouvola participated in the ceremonial launch of the new project. TikTok’s Kouvola data center project, which is being built in partnership with local developer Hyperco, will provide more capacity for TikTok to keep EU user data in the region, as opposed to transferring it back to China. And it’ll also help TikTok better ingratiate itself with European leaders, by contributing to the local economy.
6. Snapchat Announces Updated Operating System for Its Upcoming AR Glasses
Snapchat has announced the next stage in its AR wearables push, with the launch of Snap OS 2, the latest version of its operating system for its upcoming AR Spectacles.

Snapchat has announced the next stage in its AR wearables push, with the launch of Snap OS 2, the latest version of its operating system for its upcoming AR Spectacles. The updated operating system will facilitate a range of improved use cases and presentation options, which Snap hopes will help to drive take-up of its coming AR device.
7. Snapchat Launches Online Safety Education Program
Snapchat has launched a new digital literacy program, called “The Keys,” which aims to highlight the dangers of online interaction for young users, and better equip them with knowledge on how to protect themselves, and avoid problems in social apps.

Snapchat says that The Keys is a first-of-its-kind interactive online safety program specifically designed for teens and their parents. The Keys program is split into two segments, with the first looking at online risks, and the second focused on Snap-specific functions that you can use to protect yourself. The full course, Snap says, takes around 45 minutes to complete.
8. Snapchat Adds Infinite Retention and Group Streaks
Snapchat is rolling out some new options to help drive ongoing engagement and cater to group chats in the app. They are “Infinite Retention,” which enables users to save their chats in the app ongoing while “Group Streaks” will provide another means to gamify ongoing connection in the app.

Veering further away from Snap’s original, ephemeral content approach, infinite retention enables you to keep your chats in the app in perpetuity, if you choose. Infinite Retention can now be enabled for each individual conversation, and everyone receives a clear notification when the setting changes. Snap’s other new feature update is Group Streaks, which will see all chat participants contributing to a collective streak.
9. Pinterest Launches New Initiative To Encourage Educational Use
Pinterest has launched a new “Educators’ Fund” initiative, part of its broader “Pinterest for Teachers” element, which aims to help support creators who share educational content, in order to assist in the usage of Pinterest for learning-based activities.

The program, which is currently only available to U.S.-based Pinners, aims to help maximize the use of Pinterest for learning and drive more adoption of the platform for classroom-based initiatives. Pinterest for Teachers includes a range of classroom materials to help educators understand how they can use Pins within their process.
10. LinkedIn Adds Post Send and Save Insights
LinkedIn is rolling out a couple of new analytics elements to help you measure your on-platform performance, with “Saves,” which will give you data on how many people have bookmarked your post, and “Sends,” which will show you how often your post was shared in a private message.

Now, within your “Engagements” data, you’ll see both “Saves” and “Sends on LinkedIn” within your “Social engagement” tracking. Saves will show you how many people bookmarked your post in the app. Saves have become a more valuable indicator of engagement in social apps, as more people use bookmarks and similar tools to mark a post for reference.
