Welcome to Social Media Buzz Weekly, your weekly bulletin of the latest social media updates. With the social media landscape evolving with each passing day, it can be challenging to keep a tab on the rapid developments. Well, not anymore, as we have taken it upon ourselves to keep you abreast of every happening in the social media space.

So, without any further ado, let’s look at some of the most significant developments from the last week in the world of social media.

1. Meta Replaces Staff With AI, Continues To Spend Big on Development

Meta has informed staff in its risk division that a number of them would be replaced with AI-powered tech.

ree

This comes just a day after Meta also announced that it will be cutting around 600 roles from its “Superintelligence Labs” project, which is focused on developing the next stage of AI. Meta didn’t say that those roles will be replaced by AI tools, instead noting that the reduction in staff would help to streamline decision-making within the project.

2. Facebook Simplifies Page Creation Process

Facebook is rolling out a new way to simplify the process of building a business presence in the app, by giving users a clear delineation between ‘Company’ and ‘Creator’ profiles within the Page creation process.

ree

Up till now, this process has been solely focused on company pages, and facilitating page creation, with its professional accounts for creators in a different workflow. But now, Meta is looking to simplify the selection element, in order to ensure that Pages are more accurately mapped within the app.

3. TikTok Faces New Fines in Europe Over DSA Compliance

EU regulators accused TikTok and Meta of implementing “burdensome procedures and tools for researchers to request access to public data,” in order to limit regulatory scrutiny.

ree

The platforms now face potential fines that could reach into the billions. The preliminary findings mark the first major enforcement action under the EU's transparency provisions in the Digital Services Act, sending shockwaves through Silicon Valley as executives scramble to assess their exposure.TikTok has criticized the EU’s targeted application of its rules, noting that many platforms are not subject to the same rules, which is unfair to bigger players.

4. TikTok Adds AI Assistance Tools for Creators

TikTok is rolling out a new AI-powered video editing option called “Smart Split,” which will automatically clip, reframe, caption and transcribe your longer content into multiple shorter clips.

ree

Smart Split will use automated detection to find natural breaks and segments, which it will then cut into shorter clips that you can upload to the app. TikTok is also rolling out “AI Outline,” which will help creators tap into trending formats and interests by generating video titles, hashtags, hooks and outlines, based on popular content in any genre.

5. Instagram Introduces Assistive AI for Visual Creation

Instagram has introduced some updates to its “Restyle” feature that’ll make it easier to edit, reimagine, or fully transform your content in the app.

ree

Using Instagram’s updated Restyle options, you can now more easily edit your images via conversational prompts in-stream. The update is primarily designed as a smart editing and revision process, which can help you create more compelling, interesting visuals in the app. It could be a handy addition, which could make it more interesting to share your own updates, without also contributing to the flood of AI slop that’s slowly taking over social media feeds.

6. Instagram Adds Option To Draw on DM Chats

Instagram has officially announced a broader launch of its new option to draw on your DM screen, as well as place stickers wherever you like on the messaging UI.

ree

Now, you can access the “Draw” option when you tap on the “+” menu icon to the right of the message composer. You’ll then see a new set of drawing tools at the top of your screen, enabling you to add custom drawings all over your chat sequence. You can also place stickers within the frame, which will give you more ways to customize your DM discussions, and have more fun in the chat.

7. Instagram Adds Watch History for Reels

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has announced that Instagram is now getting a “Watch History” feature, which will make it easier to find any video that you’ve watched in the app.

ree

In the latest version of Instagram, you’ll now be able to find a new “Watch History” option, which will display thumbnails of all of the videos that you’ve viewed in the app over the past 30 days. So if you want to show somebody a video, but you can’t remember who posted it, you’ll now be able to go back through your viewing history to find it.

8. Snapchat Expands Access to Its Open Prompt AI Lens

After launching its first open-prompt AI Lens to paying users in September, Snapchat is now making it available to all users, as it looks to latch onto the broader AI creation trend.

ree

Snapchat’s “Imagine” Lens gives users the opportunity to re-create and/or re-contextualize their Snaps, through conversational prompts in-stream. Snapchat does have some guidelines on responsible AI use, and some limitations as to what its systems will create. But barring offensive prompts that it may not work with, you can create anything in this Lens, and share that in Snaps, or across other platforms.

9. Pinterest Launches AI Assistant To Help Find Matching Products

Pinterest is adding another AI element, as it looks to keep up with evolving discovery behaviors, with a new “Pinterest Assistant” tool that will make it easier to search for products based on examples that you find.

ree

The new Pinterest Assistant will be able to conduct searches in the app based on conversational + visual queries, where you select Pin images, then speak your search query directly into the app. Pinterest says that the system is able to produce accurate results based on real-time, “complex conversational descriptors” which will then provide accurate and helpful recommendations and shoppable products on Pinterest.

10. Pinterest Adds New AI Recommendation Tools

Pinterest is adding a new way to nudge users towards potentially relevant products in the app, with AI-powered recommendations now being added into your Pinterest board display, highlighting items that you might like, based on your usage and saved Pin history.

ree

Pinterest’s new AI-recommended board additions will give you customized prompts for items that are similar to products that you’ve already saved or shown interest in. So now, every time you save a Pin, that’ll be added to your AI-powered recommendations algorithm, which will then help Pinterest show you more relevant products and ideas, based on your interests.

11. X Prompts Users To Update Security Info Ahead of Twitter.com Retirement

X is prompting all users who use security keys to re-affirm their details in the app by November 10th, otherwise you may be locked out of your account.

ree

X won’t be taking your @handle away as such, but you may well be locked out of your account if you don’t update your 2FA login info. It’s important to note that this change only impacts those using security keys (or Yubikeys), and does not impact people using other two-factor authentication methods.

12. X Adds Another Anime-Inspired AI Chatbot

X has added a fifth AI companion to the app, with a new character called “Mika,” providing another option to engage with X’s evolving AI tools.

ree

Mika is the latest addition to xAI’s growing suite of bot options, with these characters able to engage in back-and-forth conversation, and interact like real people (to some degree), in a range of ways. Mika combines a bold, biker-girl personality with next-gen conversational intelligence, offering users a fresh and dynamic experience unlike any other Grok companion.

13. X Reports Higher Usage in EU in Latest DSA Report

It seems that X has had a bit of a turnaround in European usage, with its latest DSA Transparency Report showing that it gained users in the region, adding over 7 million monthly active recipients in the most recent reporting period (April to June 2025), bringing it up to 102 million active EU users.

ree

X usage had been on a steady decline since November 2023, when it first began sharing its EU user data, as part of its DSA reporting requirements. X hired well-known app developer Nikita Bier as its new Head of Product back in June, and Bier has been working to revive the platform’s growth, and improve the product in line with key UI issues. Bier has repeatedly claimed that X is rising in the download charts, even seeing record download levels last month, though app tracking providers have disputed this.

14. LinkedIn Reports Significant Increases in Post Comments and Video Posts

Microsoft has announced engagement statistics for its business-to-business social media platform Linkedin, highlighting major increases in post comments and video views.

ree

LinkedIn has seen a 24% increase in comments this year. LinkedIn has now seen three straight quarters of double-digit growth in video uploads. LinkedIn has previously reported that video watch time rose 36% year-over-year in 2024, with short-form video creation growing at twice the rate of other post formats, while video posts are also shared 20x more than any other content type in the app. Microsoft has also reported that LinkedIn revenue “increased 10% and 9% in constant currency, driven by Marketing Solutions.”
