Welcome to Social Media Buzz Weekly, your weekly bulletin of the latest social media updates. With the social media landscape evolving with each passing day, it can be challenging to keep a tab on the rapid developments. Well, not anymore, as we have taken it upon ourselves to keep you abreast of every happening in the social media space.
So, without any further ado, let’s look at some of the most significant developments from the last week in the world of social media.
1. Facebook Will Allow Private Groups to Switch to Public Instead
Facebook has announced a major change to groups, with admins now able to switch private groups to public if they choose, helping to improve discovery and awareness, but also reducing the privacy and protection of these communities.

All group admins will be made aware of any change in privacy settings as they happen, and the group will have three days to consider the change before it’s enacted. According to Facebook, all content posted when the group was private will remain private, and will only be accessible to people who were members of the group before it became public (as well as admins and moderators).
2. Internal Documents Indicate That Meta Is Earning Billions from Scam Ads
According to a new report from Reuters, Meta has estimated that around 10% of its overall annual revenue, equating to around $16 billion, comes from scam advertising, and/or promotions for banned goods.

The revelation was laid out in internal company documents, which Reuters’ journalists were able to access, presenting the scope of scam ad activity in Meta’s apps, and the benefit that the company derives from such. Many people have issued many complaints about scam ads and promotions across Meta’s apps, which often seemingly fall on deaf ears, with no response to user reports.
3. TikTok Announces Nominees for the US TikTok Awards
After hosting the TikTok Awards in various regions over the past two years, TikTok is now launching a U.S. version of the event as well, which will highlight the most influential creators, trends, and moments that make TikTok the heartbeat of culture for 170 million Americans.

TikTok’s U.S. Awards will incorporate fan votes for the top creators in the app, which will culminate in an awards ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium on December 18th. The event makes its stateside debut with five major names nominated for the "Creator of the Year" category: Alix Earle, Adam W, Brooke Monk, Keith Lee and Kristy Sarah, all of whom boast millions of followers.
4. Instagram Adds Competitor Insights for Professional Accounts
Instagram has added a new “Competitive Insights” element to its Professional Dashboard, which will give you another way to contextualize and measure your account performance.

If you have a business or creator account, Instagram’s new Competitive Insights option is now being rolled out within your “Professional Dashboard” options. You can choose up to 10 accounts to compare your performance against, with side-by-side comparison data on relative follower growth and posting frequency (across Reels, feed posts, ads and more).
5. Snapchat Posts Strong Revenue Result
Snapchat has reported its Q3 performance update, which shows positive progress on a couple of key fronts.

Snapchat is now up to 477 million daily actives, which is an increase of 8 million on Q2. Snapchat has also reported that monthly active users are now up to 943 million, closing in on that one billion user milestone. Moreover, Snapchat is now bringing in $750 million per year from Snapchat+ subscriptions.
6. Snapchat Brings Perplexity AI to Inboxes
Snapchat has announced a new deal with Perplexity AI that will see Perplexity’s conversational chatbot integrated into Snapchat, adding another way for Snapchatters to engage with AI tools.

Snapchat says that Perplexity will be paying it $400 million to have Perplexity appear in Snapchatter inboxes for one year. The Perplexity AI bot will become available on Snap sometime in the new year. Perplexity claims to answer more than 150 million questions each week.
7. Pinterest Reaches 600M Users
Pinterest has reached a new milestone of 600 million monthly active users, while it also posted a 17% year-over-year increase in revenue in Q3, continuing its steady growth as a key discovery platform.

Pinterest added users in every region, which is important, because it actually lost 2 million actives in Europe in its last report. Pinterest gained the most traction in the “Rest of World” category, with Brazil and Mexico seeing significant growth. 8. LinkedIn Will Allow More Types of Newsworthy Content
LinkedIn has announced an update to its community policies in order to allow more types of newsworthy content, even if that content might technically break the platform’s rules.

LinkedIn says that it’s now updating its policies to provide more clarity about cases in which it would allow such material on the platform due to its educational or newsworthy value. LinkedIn has a long list of content that it doesn’t allow, but this new policy will ease these rules in certain contexts, where LinkedIn’s team has determined that there’s newsworthy value in such.
