Welcome to Social Media Buzz Weekly, your weekly bulletin of the latest social media updates. With the social media landscape evolving with each passing day, it can be challenging to keep a tab on the rapid developments. Well, not anymore, as we have taken it upon ourselves to keep you abreast of every happening in the social media space.

So, without any further ado, let’s look at some of the most significant developments from the last week in the world of social media.

1. Meta Touts Detection Efforts Ahead of Anti-Scam Summit

Meta has shared some insights into its evolving efforts to combat scams in its apps, including these impressive data points:

According to Meta, reports about scam ads have declined by more than 50% in the last 15 months, and so far in 2025, they have removed more than 134 million scam ads. Meta also said that its teams had detected and disrupted nearly 12 million accounts in the first half of 2025- across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp - associated with the most adversarial and malicious scammers: criminal scam centers.

2. Meta Launches AI-Powered Account Support Options

Meta has introduced an update to account support, which will include more info on possible account issues, a track of reports that you’ve issued, prompts for common account queries (that will be routed to AI support), and more.

Meta’s new account support hub aims to make it easier to address profile issues, and get easier access to assistance. So you won’t necessarily be able to access a real support person, but you will have a better view of any possible issues with your account, and more ways to raise concerns, and/or find answers with AI assistance.

3. Facebook Launches Holiday Gift Showcase in Marketplace

Facebook is looking to capitalize on the potential of Marketplace for gifting, with a new Holiday Shop activation of curated items.

The activation will highlight popular gifts, based on seasonal trends, to help users find relevant listings for potential Christmas surprises. Collections is one of several updates that Facebook launched for Marketplace last month, enabling users to create groups of Marketplace listings. The idea is that this will make it easier to curate items into matching sets for varying purposes.

4. TikTok Sees Increased Shopping Activity Over Black Friday Weekend

TikTok saw nearly 50% more shoppers who bought something on TikTok Shop in the U.S., compared to the BFCM campaign period last year.

Over the four-day shopping period alone, TikTok Shop saw extraordinary growth, with sales exceeding $500 million. TikTok creator affiliates also posted nearly 10 million shoppable videos over the weekend, adding to the expansion of in-app shopping activity, and driving more potential for TikTok’s shopping push. TikTok says that live shopping, in particular, is gaining traction.

5. TikTok Launches Nearby Content Feed in Europe

TikTok has officially announced that it’s launching its “Nearby feed” of local content and recommendations to users in France, Germany, Italy and the U.K., before a broader expansion in future.

TikTok has officially announced that it’s launching its “Nearby feed” of local content and recommendations to users in France, Germany, Italy and the U.K., before a broader expansion in future. TikTok’s nearby feed will be accessible from the home screen, with the name of the tab reflecting the location you’re near.

6. Meta Announces Updates for the Instagram Marketing API

Meta has announced several updates to the Instagram Marketing API, which will enable third-party management platforms to add in more options to gather relevant engagement data, in order to help inform marketing and measurement approaches for your IG management.

Meta is rolling out four new metrics to the Insights endpoint, along with an update to the existing views metric. Meta is also expanding its content management and publishing flexibility, including support for Trial Reels and the ability to delete media, while it’s also launching two new API endpoints to help manage partnerships and content co-creation.

7. Instagram Tests Early Access Reels To Help Drive Audience Growth

Instagram is trying out another way to help creators get more followers, this time via early access Reels, which will only be viewable by people who follow that user.

Some creators are now being given access to an “early access” Reels option, which enables them to lock their Reel for a period of time, with only followers able to access it before it goes live for everyone. These Reels show a clock with a star icon on the cover in the grid and a blurred cover labeled ‘Early Access.’ When viewers tap in, they see a message encouraging them to follow the creator to watch the Reel, along with a timer for when the Reel will be available for everyone and a follow button.

8. Snapchat Launches ‘Winter Village’ Luxury Brands Showcase

Snapchat has launched a new festive AR activation, with its in-app “Snapchat Winter Village” including branded activations from Chopard, BOSS, and Lancôme, all within an immersive Lens experience.

Available in the app from December 1 to 31 (via the Lens carousel), the experience includes a range of branded promotions and product showcases that you can explore via the app. Though there are only three brands included in the current experience, and all are high-end luxury offerings. It seems like the type of activation that would be better showcasing a broader range of brands and their seasonal offerings, but there may also be limits on what Snap can include within a single Lens experience.

9. Snapchat Launches Wix Integration to Simplify Snap Ads Creation

Snapchat has announced a new integration with website building platform Wix, which will enable Wix users to create Snapchat ad campaigns direct from the Wix dashboard.

Wix users will now be able to connect their Snapchat account to their Wix profile, linking their product catalog to Snap’s ad creation pipeline. You’ll then be able to run Snap ads direct from Wix, so you can expand your marketing efforts. Wix is primarily focused on supporting SMBs in building their online presence, with this new addition a part of Snap’s expanded effort to win over smaller businesses.

10. Snapchat Banned in Russia, Another Blow for the App

With Snapchat’s growth already flat-lining in key markets, and the platform set to lose another half a million users due to Australia’s under-16 social media ban, the platform has also now been banned in Russia, due to its reported usage by organized terror groups.

Snapchat has been cut off in Russia, along with Apple’s FaceTime, after an investigation found them to be facilitating suspect activities. The loss of 8.5 million users will put another dent in Snapchat’s growth potential, and limit the value of its ad business. A decline in usage now seems almost inevitable for Q4, though some of these losses will be countered by ongoing growth in developing regions.

11. Musk Goes To War With EU Over Latest X DSA Penalty

Elon Musk has hit back at the European Union after it hit the tech tycoon's X social media platform with a major fine, telling his 230 million online followers that the EU should be "abolished."

Following a high-profile probe seen as a test of EU resolve to police Big Tech, the social media platform owned by the world's richest person was slapped with a fine of 120 million euros ($140 million) for breaking the bloc's digital rules. The penalty was swiftly criticised by the U.S. administration of Donald Trump, who as president aligned with Musk on a contentious effort to slash the federal workforce and cut spending, before the two had a falling out.
