Welcome to Social Media Buzz Weekly, your weekly bulletin of the latest social media updates. With the social media landscape evolving with each passing day, it can be challenging to keep a tab on the rapid developments. Well, not anymore, as we have taken it upon ourselves to keep you abreast of every happening in the social media space.
So, without any further ado, let’s look at some of the most significant developments from the last week in the world of social media.
1. Meta Implements More Protocols to Detect Underage Users
Meta has announced an updated, artificial intelligence-powered process to detect user age, featuring simplified reporting flows for accounts that users suspect are held by underage users, along with prompts to help parents manage their kids’ social media use.

Meta’s revised age-checking system now includes AI visual analysis, which will scan uploaded photos and videos for visual clues about a person’s age. Meta said this revised process will build on its existing age detection measures, which include scanning user profiles for birthday celebrations or mentions of school grades. Meta is also rolling out simplified reporting of accounts that users suspect might be held by underage users. The company said it will also streamline its reporting process using AI technology, and offer improved measures to detect when banned users seek to create new accounts. In addition, Meta is implementing proactive teen account detection technology in more regions.
2. Meta is Preparing to Launch AI Agents to Undertake Tasks for Users
Meta is reportedly working on two new agentic artificial intelligence tools, which would enable users to let its AI systems conduct tasks on their behalf, including shopping, with minimal human guidance.

Meta is currently working on Hatch, an AI agent that would be made available within its apps, and would be able to conduct tasks based on conversational guidance. Hatch sounds similar to Open Claw, another agentic AI tool that goes beyond basic question and answer responses, and can be linked into a user’s workflow to undertake tasks on its own. This would seemingly enable users to ask the AI agent to monitor for the best deals, and help users find the most relevant product matches, which would then also empower the system to handle the purchase process for each on their behalf.
3. Meta Challenges Latest Legal Penalties
Meta has challenged Britain’s Office of Communications over the scope of penalties that can be leveled at the company over violations, and has also asked a Los Angeles court to throw out a verdict regarding the company’s liability for causing a woman’s depression.

Under U.K. law, Ofcom is able to impose fines on Meta based on its worldwide revenue, rather than the revenue of an individual site or app, and regardless of whether that revenue relates to regulated services. Meta said this is disproportionate and unlawful, and unfairly penalizes the company based on its size and scope.
4. TikTok Launches Ad-Free Offering in UK
TikTok is offering U.K. users the opportunity to pay 3.99 pounds per month (about $5.44) to use the app ad-free, which will also enable users to switch off data tracking for ad targeting, in line with new regulations around U.K. data control.

TikTok added that the core TikTok experience won’t be impacted. Paying users won’t see ads, and TikTok will stop using their personal data for ad targeting, in line with regulations. The update relates to evolving U.K. laws around personal data usage stemming from a high-profile case in which a U.K user took legal action against Meta over the use of her personal information for ad targeting.
5. Instagram Eyes Long-Form Content on CTV
Tessa Lyons, Instagram’s vice president of product, said at the Scalable Summit that long-form content is a key element of the app’s planning. Lyons told the audience that Instagram is looking beyond short-form content, inspired by TikTok, and moving towards a more YouTube-like approach to help drive creator engagement and opportunity.

Lyons said that two years from now, Instagram “will be a unique part of creators’ long-form strategy in addition to their short-form strategy.” That could include more support for podcasts, live-streams, and even longer stories told through mini-dramas, which have become a popular element of TikTok.
6. Instagram Tests Captions on Each Post Within Carousels
Instagram is testing out a new update that would enable users to caption each unique image or video within a carousel, providing another way to maximize the value of its multi-image posts.

Some Instagram users who are part of the test pool are being made aware of the update via a pop-up within the composer, which explains that they “can now add a caption for each photo or video in your post.” That would enable more context, and more opportunity to share expanded info within carousels, increasing the informational value and utility of carousel posts. Statistically, carousel posts also drive more engagement. As such, carousel posts should already be a consideration for those looking to build their IG presence, and this new option could potentially add another way to use carousel posts to create expanded branding and contextual impact.
7. Meta Updates Parental Supervision Tools
Instagram is looking to give parents more oversight into how their children are engaging with content within the app via a new, integrated approach within Meta’s Family Center dashboard. The update will display key topics that their kids are viewing, as well as how that listing evolves over time.

The expansion builds on Instagram’s “Your Algorithm” control option, which enables users to manage what topics the system thinks users are interested in. Now, with teen accounts, parents will be able to view this listing on behalf of their kids, which will provide more insight into the topics that are grabbing their child’s attention.
8. Snapchat Hosts AR Developer Bootcamp
Snapchat has shared insight into its recent AR developer bootcamp, where it brought together some of AR’s top talents to discuss the latest innovations and updates.

Snap’s developer bootcamp gave these creators an opportunity to come together in person, with participants from countries including the U.S., Zambia, Sweden and Belgium attending the event and discussing the latest AR innovations and opportunities. The hope is that these collaborative events will help Snap continue to lead the way on AR tech, and develop more unique use cases for Snap’s AR Specs device, as the company looks to build towards a consumer launch.
9. Pinterest Updates Ad Relevance
Pinterest has shared an overview of the latest improvements to its ad serving mode, with the updated model now able to factor in both a user’s offsite conversion history and in-the-moment search behavior, in order to serve more personally relevant promotions.

The updated system is now able to assess more input on related pins, alongside past purchase history, in order to improve ad relevance. In basic terms, Pinterest has integrated more data points in order to predict likely user interest in each Promoted Pin, including past conversion and site visit history, thus driving improved relevance and response. Pinterest said its updated model has achieved a 3x to 10x improvement in ad relevance in testing.
10. X Updates History Tab for iOS
X has launched an updated History tab for iOS, which separates engagement history into different content types to help users keep track of what they’ve seen and liked in the app.

X’s updated activity display separates content into different content categories, so users can easily find previously viewed videos and articles. There’s also a separate listing for liked posts. Long-form content has become a bigger focus for X of late, due to the value that longer posts can provide for xAI’s projects. A key challenge for xAI’s products, such as its Grok chatbot, is that its artificial intelligence tools are powered by X discussion. Getting more long-form content posted to the app would help to address this. X has been working to encourage longer posts by making its long-form Articles option available to all Premium subscribers (previously this was only available to Premium+ users).
