Welcome to Social Media Buzz Weekly, your weekly bulletin of the latest social media updates. With the social media landscape evolving with each passing day, it can be challenging to keep a tab on the rapid developments. Well, not anymore, as we have taken it upon ourselves to keep you abreast of every happening in the social media space.

So, without any further ado, let’s look at some of the most significant developments from the last week in the world of social media.

1. TikTok US Reports Generating $81B in Economic Value

TikTok has published a new report on its impact on the U.S. economy, which outlined how the platform’s approach to jobs, business promotions and learning and development opportunities.

The report, which was conducted by PF Global on behalf of the app, incorporated responses from 11,123 U.S. adults and more than 5,000 U.S. businesses. More than half the business responses came from SMBs. The report said that TikTok helped to generate more than $81 billion in economic value for U.S. businesses. Moreover, 93% of business respondents agreed that using TikTok helped them increase sales by promoting their products and services on the platform, while 75% of businesses said that they have commissioned creators for paid promotional work.

2. TikTok Unveils AI-Powered Updates at Advertising Week

TikTok has announced new ad updates at its Advertising Week presentation, including a new AI-powered shopping assistant that will help users find what they want via an in-app search. The updated AI shopping experience will let users pose conversational queries in-stream to receive personalized product recommendations.

TikTok also announced Agentic Leads, an automated tool designed to help businesses gather leads via AI-guided conversations. The option will be available for use via direct messages, and will power new lead agent flows for advertiser-owned websites.

3. Instagram Adds Threads Sharing Sticker for Stories

Instagram has added a new Threads sharing sticker, which enables users to post Threads to their Stories, providing another way to boost exposure for Threads posts. The new Threads sticker will let Instagram users choose a Threads post to add to their Stories frame.

When selected, the feature lets users select from a list of any Threads posts that they’ve previously liked or saved, including their own posts. The sticker replicates the functionality of Threads’ recent quote posts update, which also lets users overlay Threads posts as stickers. However, that function works for shared images instead.

4. Instagram Adds AI Songs to DMs

Instagram has added a song creation option to its DM inbox element, which enables users to generate a song using AI to send to friends.

Instagram users will now see a new option to create a song in their DM sharing options. When tapped, users will be guided to add lyrics and choose a music genre for their AI-generated track. Meta said that the feature could provide a fun engagement option.

5. Instagram Tests Read-Only Mode

Instagram is testing a new option that would let users view a profile in read-only mode. When viewing a profile in this mode, users wouldn’t be able to like or comment on posts.

This could be handy for those looking to spy on people in the app, alleviating the concern that they might accidentally slip up and like a post from three years back. Paying subscribers to Instagram Plus may soon have this as another add-on function, which could make it a more interesting package for some users.

6. Instagram Tests Option to Open to Reels

Instagram could be taking another step towards making Reels the app’s main focus, with a new test of an alternative UI experience that would let users choose to open to their Reels feed instead of the current post feed experience.

The in-app explainer said that Stories would be displayed at the top of the home screen, as normal, while users would be able to swipe across to the traditional feed. Users would also be able to revert to the regular feed experience whenever they wanted to, which could be an easy way for Instagram to lean more into Reels without upsetting the user applecart too much.

7. X Launches Updated Video Composer

X has refreshed its video upload and posting process once again, with this latest update providing a more focused layout, and editable captions, which can be refined using the app’s Grok-powered artificial intelligence tools.

The main focus of the update is the improved captioning process, which lets creators manually edit captions in the composer, or ask Grok to correct them. It also allows Grok to translate captions into another language.
