Vietnam's AI Story: How Local Language Is Shaping Gemini Adoption

Here, language sits at the heart of the Gemini experience, with users turning to AI not only to communicate in their native tongue but also to bridge linguistic and knowledge gaps.

Gemini’s Southeast Asia Report 2026 reveals that Vietnamese users are using Gemini to translate, learn, study, code and connect with the wider world. The country's strong preference for Vietnamese-language prompts, combined with its enthusiasm for academic and technical applications, makes its AI journey particularly distinctive.

Here are major findings of the report.

1. Nearly 9 in 10 Prompts in Vietnam Are in Vietnamese

Language is perhaps the defining feature of Vietnam's Gemini usage. 89% of prompts in Vietnam are written in Vietnamese, the highest share of local-language prompts in Southeast Asia. At the same time, Vietnamese users are the region's most frequent users of Gemini's translation capabilities.

This combination makes Gemini more than a conventional AI assistant for Vietnamese users. It can serve as a linguistic bridge– allowing people to interact with AI in the language they are most comfortable with while also helping them navigate foreign-language content and communicate beyond Vietnam.

2. Gemini Is Helping Vietnamese Users Connect With the World

The report highlights translation as a particularly important use case in Vietnam. Users turn to Gemini to understand foreign documents, set up expert-focused websites, translate phrases and even help communicate with tourists.

The report illustrates this through the example of a highland tea farmer in Lao Cai who uses Gemini to overcome the language barrier with potential international buyers. He can describe his thoughts in Vietnamese and ask Gemini to turn them into professional English descriptions, helping him create farm brochures and polish invoices.

The example demonstrates how AI can make global communication more accessible to people and businesses that may not otherwise have the resources to overcome language barriers.

3. Vietnam Is Leading Southeast Asia in Academic AI Use

Vietnam's relationship with Gemini extends strongly into education. The report ranks the country first in Southeast Asia by share of prompts in the Academic user journey, at 17%. More than 160,000 students use Gemini Canvas for Exam Prep each month, generating more than 55,000 teaching-related prompts on a typical day.

These figures point to AI becoming increasingly embedded in the learning process. Students can use Gemini to work through difficult concepts, prepare for examinations and seek explanations, while educators can use it to support teaching-related tasks.

4. Coding and Mathematics Are Major AI Use Cases

Vietnamese users are also displaying a strong appetite for technical applications. The report identifies Vietnamese users as Southeast Asia's most frequent users of mathematical capabilities, with math prompts accounting for 5% of all prompts. They are also the region's second-most frequent users of coding capabilities, which account for 4% of prompts.

The report also notes that 32% of prompts are sent from computers, indicating an appetite for deeper, focused technical work rather than exclusively quick, mobile interactions. Together, these behaviours suggest that Gemini is finding a place in Vietnam not only as an everyday assistant but also as a tool for more demanding academic and technical tasks.

5. AI Is Becoming a Personal Tutor for Vietnamese Students

The report brings these education and technical trends together through the example of a third-year data engineering student in Ho Chi Minh City. She uses Gemini as an on-call tutor during demanding study periods, working through mathematical proofs step by step and asking it to debug code.

This example captures the broader transformation taking place in Vietnam's education ecosystem. Instead of simply providing answers, Gemini can support students through iterative learning– explaining difficult concepts, working through equations and helping identify problems in code.

Vietnam's Gemini story is ultimately about using AI to overcome barriers– whether they are linguistic, educational or technical. With 89% of prompts written in Vietnamese, the country's users are demonstrating that AI adoption does not require people to abandon their native language. At the same time, Vietnam's strong academic, mathematics and coding usage shows that its AI adoption extends well beyond everyday assistance.
