Hi folks, we are back with our weekly edition of China’s Digital Digest, wherein we bring you weekly updates on China’s digital space. The report takes a quick glance at China’s complex and rapidly evolving social media landscape by providing updates on the latest happenings across the social media industry. Here are the major highlights of the report.

1. Tencent Retains Global No.1 Spot Among Mobile Game Publishers in 2025

Tencent Games has retained its position as the world’s top mobile game publisher, driven by stable performance from titles including Honor of Kings, PUBG MOBILE, and PUBG MOBILE.

Honor of Kings generated over USD 2 billion in revenue in 2025 (excluding China’s third-party Android channels), marking a 5% year-on-year increase and setting a new historical high for the franchise. Meanwhile, Tencent’s next-generation tactical shooter Delta Force emerged as a standout performer. Celebrating its first anniversary, the title recorded a 29-fold revenue increase year-on-year in 2025, ranking No. 5 on China’s iOS mobile game revenue chart and No. 29 globally.

2. DeepSeek Open-Sources “Engram” Memory Module

DeepSeek, in collaboration with Peking University, has published a new research paper introducing and open-sourcing “Engram,” a conditional memory module designed to address the lack of efficient knowledge retrieval mechanisms in current large language models.

The paper includes DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng as a co-author. The research proposes conditional memory as a new modeling dimension that complements the conditional computation paradigm of Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models. The authors argue that traditional Transformer architectures simulate knowledge retrieval inefficiently through computation.

3. Pinduoduo Tests “Billions Supermarket”

Pinduoduo is quietly testing a new in-app vertical called “Billions Supermarket,” marking its latest foray into supermarket and grocery retail.

Anchored in the platform’s flagship Billions Subsidy program, the feature focuses on limited-time coupons and heavy price subsidies. For now, access is restricted to a randomly selected group of users as part of an internal trial. Early test screens suggest that Billions Supermarket’s core draw is its combination of steep discounts and a wide product range. The platform has introduced a weekly coupon cycle, with fresh vouchers dropping every Monday at 12:00 a.m., including 20% and 15% discount offers.

4. Furniture Retailer Ikea to Close 7 Stores in China Amid Property Market Slump

Ikea will close seven stores in mainland China, as the multinational furniture retailer grapples with the country’s weak property market and sluggish consumer spending, which have dampened demand for its goods.

Following a comprehensive review, Ikea China said the seven stores would cease operations from February 2. These are located in Shanghai’s suburban Baoshan district, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Nantong and Xuzhou in eastern Jiangsu province, Ningbo in eastern Zhejiang province and Harbin in northeast Heilongjiang province.

5. China to Probe Food Delivery Platforms Under Anti-Monopoly Law

China has launched a market competition probe and assessment for its food delivery platforms, the State Council has announced, a move analysts said was an affirmation of the country’s determination to continue to combat self-defeating competition.

The assessment will be conducted through on-site inspections, in-person interviews and questionnaires to gain a detailed understanding of competition among food delivery platforms, the statement said, in addition to soliciting views from merchants, workers and consumers operating under or using the platforms. Authorities will also comprehensively examine market conditions, carry out analysis and propose corrective measures, according to the statement.
