Welcome to Social Media Buzz Weekly, your weekly bulletin of the latest social media updates. With the social media landscape evolving with each passing day, it can be challenging to keep a tab on the rapid developments. Well, not anymore, as we have taken it upon ourselves to keep you abreast of every happening in the social media space.

So, without any further ado, let’s look at some of the most significant developments from the last week in the world of social media.

1. Meta Expands Access to Opportunity Score To Help Improve Campaign Performance

After refining it over the past few months, Meta is now highlighting its “Opportunity Score” metric to more users, via a new alert in Ads Manager that aims to raise awareness of its ad performance recommendations.

Meta is now alerting advertisers to the opportunities of its ad Opportunity Score, which aims to help advertisers with AI-based recommendations, based on overall Meta ad performance. Essentially, Opportunity Score provides a 0-100 point summary as to how well your campaign is set up to maximize performance.

2. Meta Announces 2025 ‘Conversations’ Messaging Conference

Meta has announced that it will host its “Conversations” conference in the U.S. for the first time this year, with Miami to be the host city for its messaging-focused event.

Meta’s fourth annual Conversations event will be held on July 1st, where Meta will outline its latest updates in messaging, including business messaging opportunities. Meta has previously held its Conversations conferences in Brazil and India, with WhatsApp being the dominant messaging app in both markets. But with WhatsApp usage on the rise in the U.S., this time around, Meta’s chosen Miami as the IRL destination, which points to the potential that it sees for business messaging, based on evolving connection trends.

3. TikTok Adds Option To Activate Customer DMs During Livestreams

TikTok is rolling out another way for livestreamers to generate direct leads from their broadcasts, with the option to switch on DMs during livestreams.

TikTok is now informing livestream creators that they can activate DMs during streams via a “LIVE setup for client acquisition” menu within the broadcast options. That’ll then add a message CTA button within your broadcast, so that viewers can quickly and easily get in contact during the stream.

4. TikTok Expands Ad Placement Options for ‘Pulse’ Campaigns

TikTok has announced some major new exposure opportunities for brands, with updated sponsorship options that will provide more ways to tap into trending moments.

First off, TikTok is rolling out some new options for its “Pulse” ads, which enable advertisers to place their ads alongside popular TikTok clips. Originally launched in 2022, Pulse enables advertisers to place their ads alongside TikTok clips that are in the top 4% of performers on any given day, based on views and engagement. In addition to its Pulse updates, TikTok is also rolling out new sponsorship options, which will provide additional opportunities to place your ads alongside relevant, trending content.

5. Trump Says He May Extend TikTok Sell-off Deadline Once Again

US president Donald Trump has said that he could extend the TikTok sell-off deadline once again if a deal cannot be established by the end of this latest period.

The current extension gives TikTok until the 18 of June to establish a sell-off deal with a viable U.S. partner. And while various names have been suggested as likely candidates, no concrete details have emerged, though that’s also likely due to the rising U.S.-China trade war, which has effectively shelved TikTok negotiations for the time being.

6. TikTok Hit With Big Fine in Europe for Chinese Data Transfers

TikTok has been fined €530 million by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) for infringements of GDPR regulations relating to the transfer of European user data to China, while it will also be required to revise its processes within the next 6 months.

As noted, the fine is a result of an investigation into the TikTok’s transfers of user data to China, which is not an authorised region under the GDPR regulations, in regards to data safety. Since Chinese regulations don’t align with these requirements, TikTok will now have to pay a hefty fine, and reassess its systems in line with GDPR requirements.

7. Instagram Launches First Official Use of Unlockable Reels

Instagram has launched its first official use of lockable Reels, which enable creators to share Reels that can only be viewed by those who have a code.

With lockable Reels, creators will be able to hide their content behind a lock code, with a prompt for users to “Enter secret code” to view the content. As noted, Instagram tested this out on its Design profile early last month, and now, the Weeknd has activated the first official usage of the feature, with the musician launching a clip from his film “Hurry Up Tomorrow” that’s hidden behind a lock code.

8. Snap Hosts First Under the Ghost Live Music Event

After announcing its new musical performance series “Under the Ghost”, Snap has now hosted its first performance, with Kid Cudi showcasing a range of his latest tracks at Snap’s Santa Monica studio.

Snapchat’s Under the Ghost musical events are literally performed underneath a Snapchat ghost logo (Snapchat’s ghost logo is actually called “Ghostface Chillah” for additional trivia points), with a range of big name artists set to grace the stage in the coming months.

9. Pinterest Announces Expanded Inclusion Fund Support Program

Pinterest has announced the next evolution of its Inclusion Fund initiative, which aims to provide training and support to small businesses, independent publishers, and creator agencies that are owned and operated by those from historically marginalized communities.

The program will be expanded to more regions in 2025, with creators from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, the U.K., Germany, France, India, Australia, Japan, and Indonesia, all able to apply. Originally launched in 2021, Pinterest says that the Inclusion Fund has supported over 350 content producers thus far, helping to drive ongoing success in the app.

10. Pinterest Rolls Out Enhanced Visual Search Features

Pinterest is looking to enhance discovery in the app, by adding more options for visual search, which will make it easier for users to segment different elements of each Pin image to find related, or more personally relevant products.

Pinterest is updating its visual search process to simplify discovery, based on specific elements of a Pin image. Pinterest is also looking to make it easier to access its visual search elements, by enabling users to long-press on any Pin to switch to the visual discovery process.

11. X’s Community Notes Reaches 1M Contributors

While it’s not perfect, and it remains a contentious element for a range of reasons, X’s Community Notes program continues to expand, with a million X users now actively contributing to its Notes submission and approval process.

That’s a lot of community input, which is crucial to the effective operation of the Community Notes model, while as you can see in the clip above, X is also touting the fact that both Meta and TikTok have also moved to implement similar Community Notes-style approaches to complement their own moderation systems.

12. X Suspends Accounts in India Amid Evolving Regional Conflict

X has once again moved to block a range of accounts in India, at the request of Indian government officials, amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, and Indian authorities looking to manage the situation.

As per X, it received executive orders from the Indian government requiring X to block over 8,000 accounts in India, subject to potential penalties including significant fines and imprisonment of the company’s local employees. The orders include demands to block access in India to accounts belonging to international news organizations and prominent X users. In most cases, the Indian government has not specified which posts from an account have violated India’s local laws.

13. X Experiments With Upvotes and Downvotes on Posts

It seems that X is considering another UI update, this time focused on the Like icon, which may soon be changing to a thumbs up instead. Some users are now seeing a thumbs up icon instead of the usual heart, while the icon has also been moved to the left-hand side.

Musk has suggested that he wants the feed to be “more clean,” with updates like this set to simplify and improve the process. And from a visual perspective, that makes some sense, however removing the function buttons will also likely impact overall engagement, because users won’t have that immediate prompt guiding them to react.

14. LinkedIn Launches AI-Powered Career Discovery Tools

LinkedIn is rolling out a new, AI-powered job search process, which will enable users to describe their dream job in basic terms, which LinkedIn’s system will then be able to match to actual roles and opportunities.

15. LinkedIn Takes First Steps Toward Creator Monetization With ‘BrandLink’

With video consumption rising on LinkedIn, the professional social network is adding new ways for marketers to tap into popular video content, with an expansion of its Wire program, which it’s now renaming as “BrandLink”.

As with its Wire offering, BrandLink enables brands to place their video ads alongside “premium publisher content” in the app. But now, LinkedIn’s expanding those placements to influencer content as well, as a first step towards facilitating creator monetization in the app.
